The House

It was a beautiful house,
New and Proud,
Loved and cherished and cared for.

It sheltered and fostered.
It enclosed and wrapped its walls
Around people who loved it.

And the house was happy.

Years passed.
Loved ones moved on,
Until the only one left passed on as well.

And the rooms stood empty,
The well-used walls, nicked and scored
With happy scars, echoing with time.

And the house was sad.
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Then workers came to shine it up,
To cover the scars and fill in the scratches,
To strip away the veneer of life,

To add a new roof and replace the appliances,
To make it presentable
for potential buyers.

And the house was apprehensive.

Soon new people moved in,
With their stuff and their baggage,
With their hopes and expectations,

With their different sounds and different scents,
With their new ideas and
Unfamiliar ways,

And the house was curious.

The new couple was unsure,
Not knowing the first thing
About how to keep a house.

But, they learned and they stumbled,
They broke and they fixed.
Always trying their best.

And the house was hopeful.

Then the families came
All noise and chaos, messy and boisterous
And full of love.

The four year olds and
The sixty year olds.
4 generations came often to visit.

And the house knew it would be happy once more.
